what is Point Blank?

The Origins of Point Blank

When Rob Cowan set up Point Blank back in the 90's, it started life as a recording studio. Artists and producers came in to record their hits there: people like D:Ream, Sasha and Allister Whitehead all had chart success which came out of sessions at the original Point Blank studio. When people started asking Rob how to use the equipment he had a brainwave and wrote a course in music production, closely followed by DJing. Word got round clubland and pretty soon he had his hands full teaching DJs how to produce records and musicians how to DJ.

Amazing Tutors

As things got busier, there was no way Rob could teach all the courses himself so he started to work with a group of producers he knew from the industry: they had all had records in the charts and certainly knew their way around a studio! This habit of using people we know has continued where possible to create a formidable team of creative and media tutors.

Young People

With Point Blank's rep growing, young people who wanted to attend the courses but could not afford the fees started to get in touch. Rob found a way to fund this by approaching local government and the seeds of the Point Blank Community Learning department were sown. Over the years we have worked with literally tens of thousands of young people and the list of courses has grown as young people ask us to write new programs for them.

Today

Point Blank now employs 22 full-timers and over 100 freelance creative and media tutors. We have a fully equipped state-of-the-art college in Hackney which is renowned throughout the world as a centre of music production excellence netting us the 'Best Music Production and DJ School' award six years in a row at the prestigious industry T-Scan Awards hosted by DJ Magazine.
