My Work Experience
15 year old Ify Obanye recently completed a week's work experience at Point Blank. This is how she got on:
Ify's Diary
Day 1 - Singing Course
On arriving at Point Blank I introduced myself and and was informed of what I would be doing today and for the rest of the week. I was shown around the office and then taken to the Music College to start my first course which was the singing course. I was then introduced to the singing teacher, Carol and two other students in her class. I found the singing lesson great and very helpful in many ways, I really enjoyed it because I learnt different techniques in making my voice sound stronger, and developing my pronunciation in a song. I also learnt that breathing is the key to a great voice. My first day was great!
Day 2 - Office
Today was different and very new to me; today I worked in the Point Blank office. It was a new and good experience for me because I got to experience how things work in an office and it was fascinating and interesting to see how people in an office communicate and get their job done while also creating an atmosphere that is friendly, happy and welcoming. I really enjoyed it and felt a part of it as I too had tasks to do. It wasn’t easy for me, but I still got through it and tried to do my best. I got to learn different valuable things and got the chance to make my own beat on their Music Mixer, and that was fun!
Day 3 - Office
Today I was given some Young Hackney marketing work to do. I did a mailout to promote the Young Hackney work experience program all over hackney, to schools, youth clubs and libraries. I used the internet to find the addresses and then printed them off onto envelopes. I then enclosed some flyers and letters telling young people how to get involved and then posted them off. When I had completed this task I helped with other tasks that needed doing around the office. I enjoyed working in the office today and I felt that I was a real member of staff working for Point Blank.
Day 4 - Magazine Course
Today was a great day. I took part on a magazine course which was tutored by John. There weren’t many people that turned up for the class, but I helped them with anything that needed to be done. I was given a task where I had to make up questions to ask the Editor of the magazine ‘Grime N’ Candy’, Blessing. I also had to prepare for an interview for Blessing and myself, which was then videotaped. It was a really great experience for me because it was my first time interviewing another people on camera. At 12:30 I went on my lunch break and went back to the singing course that I started earlier this week to see how the rest of the class were doing. They were doing great! Carol let me in and allowed me to sing again with them. It felt great singing alongside other great singers and seeing how we all had improved throughout the week. I then went out to get some lunch and I met up with some of the staff and they invited me to have lunch with them. We went to the park and ate and talked for a little bit and later headed back to the office and I went back to the magazine course. By this time there was not much to be done since the magazine was almost finished, so I went on the computer to view the Young Hackney website and give some feedback. When my time was up I went home happy because I had a good day at work.
Day 5 - My last day
Today is my last day at Point Blank and I have enjoyed every bit of it, this week has been great and helpful. At the moment I'm writing up my diary of the week. I also had an interiew by Stefan which was really good, he asked me some good questions and I answered them truthfully. As it was the last day of the singing course today I went back to the music college to see the students record their song in the studio. It was good to hear the improvement that they had made and it really made me want to pursue something in the music industry because I saw how good the students felt when they were singing in the recording booth and I would love to do that, I love to sing. Today was more of a relaxing day for me, exploring other things. I will miss Point Blank because I truly enjoyed everything I did throughout the week and I will miss and remember the nice and friendly people that I met.
