feedback on the concorde consultation

Drawings of the proposed scheme and a model (including images of the Stoke Newinton Youth Centre) were shown to the centre users. Here's a list of the comments that were made over the course of our evening's consultation:

Hall

  • Mirrors needed in the hall for dance (possibly at the short end of the hall). Stainless steel reflective surface not recommended as these tend to distort reflections. A timber sliding casing would help prevent damage when in use for other activities, for example ball games.
  • Dancing bars (for ballet, etc) also needed. Perpendicular to the mirrored wall? Don’t need to run the full length of the wall.
  • Can a sprung floor be provided?
  • Can the lighting in the hall be improved? Especially for performances.
  • Can the hall be easily sectioned with moving walls or fabric so can be used better for multiple functions?

Other areas

  • A space for weight lifting/similar gym activities is a priority.
  • Ensure sufficient space to play pool and table tennis (area around the tables).
  • Will new lockers have locks or will the young people have to provide these?
  • The kitchen currently has one fridge-freezer which is not sufficient for users. Can this capacity be increased?
  • Colour scheme suggestions for the building in order of preference – purple, black, silver, white, red, green, pink.
  • Can some of the internal graffiti be preserved? Perhaps photographed and transferred to canvas for display in the refurbished building?
  • How can the scheme attract more girls to use the space? To promote this, the centre is currently closed off to boys for an evening so that girls can carry out activities.
  • The music area needs to be soundproof and also have the ability to be closed off. A booth needed?
  • Younger centre users use the space where the pool table is located for arts and crafts. The activities are messy and it would be better if these two activities could take place in separate spaces.
  •  Both boys and girls need a space to practise hair dressing and hair barbing.
  • A quiet area (or area that can be closed off) required for youths to carry out homework. This activity is currently allotted a time slot in the side (music) room.
  • Can the large fixed table be loose tables instead so that the kitchen area becomes more flexible?

External areas

  • Games area needs to be better marked out to encourage use of the space.
  • The surface is gravel based and worn down so damages balls when sports are played on it. Can this be resurfaced with tarmac so that basket ball and 5 aside football can be played?
  • The bin store needs to be closer to the gate for easy access by refuse removers.
  • A patch of turf area suggested at the back.
  • Cameras might be needed in some areas for safety.
