A Mystery Tour of Hackney

Grand Tour of Hackney

Shoreditch Youth Forum led a group of twenty 13 - 19 year olds on a Grand Tour of Hackney over the half term, taking in both the hidden historical corners and the newly-emerging landmarks in the East. The project, funded by the Youth Opportunity Fund, gave all the participants a sound knowledge of bike safety as well as snippets from Hackney's rich history.

Cycling through the woodsThe route began in Stoke Newington and wound from Abney Cemetery southwards, taking in Victoria Park, the Regents canal and Hackney Wick; finishing up at the new Olympic stadium. Mary Sewell, a local historian and Blue Badge Tourist Guide gave the stories behind the sights.

Everyone on the tour gained Bike Ability accreditation - learning essentials such as emergency braking, as well as tips on how to ride smart on the roads.

The Council is offering free cycling training for any Hackney residents, whether they want to learn how to ride a bike, or improve their road-cycling skills. For details on how to book, call 020 8356 3000 or see www.hackney.gov.uk/cycle-training
