Archbishop Desmond Tutu has commended four young people from Hackney for their impressive efforts in addressing some of the social issues facing the borough.
Aysha Mirza (15), Naomi Lewis (16), Zanele Sibindi (19) and Zenani Sibindi (19) (pictured above, left to right with the Archbishop) are the Hackney Quest champions striving to build bridges between neighbourhoods, gangs, cultures and faiths in Hackney.
When asked where the passion for such community involvement comes from, Aysha said: “It’s time for young people to be recognised for all the good things that they do in Hackney… we just want to live in a place where we can all learn from each other and respect everyone, whatever their background or age.”
As if the recognition from Archbishop Tutu wasn’t enough, the group led the launch of the first Ubuntu Youth Peace Day celebration on 2nd April. With over 200 attendees representing diverse backgrounds and faiths, the Ubuntu Youth Peace Day event was, according to Geoff Taylor, Hackney Councillor: “...testament that differing backgrounds and circumstances can be united to promote individuality, love, unity and community, the essence of the African concept of Ubuntu.”
Zanele summed up the experience by saying: “We walked away feeling just human and not African, British or Asian and that’s Ubuntu.”
