Hackney Quest head to Capetown

posted by: Administrator

Hackney Quest fundraising

Nine young people from Hackney Quest are organising a cultural/educational trip to Cape Town in October 2010. Once there, they will work closely with young South Africans to discover the issues they face as well as share experiences of living in Hackney.

The group will:

  • Run workshops which promote cultural harmony, the empowerment of young people and youth participation
  • Support the development of projects where young people have a valued voice
  • Run workshops which support young people to have healthy relationships, and discuss the global issue of HIV/AIDS
  • Volunteer at a homeless shelter and work with vulnerable groups of people
  • ·Explore the history and culture of South Africa with young people who live in townships

So far they've raised almost £2,000 by doing bake sales, car washes, fundraisers, BBQs, sponsored non-uniform day and from donations. They are furthering their fundraising efforts by bag packing at local supermarkets… this Saturday afternoon they will be at TESCO, Morning Lane. They also plan to do a Sponsored Midnight Cycle in October from Hackney Quest to the South African Embassy.

The group leave for Cape Town in 6 weeks and still need lots of support. If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so online at http://www.justgiving.com/Keeley-Williams  Funds will not only go towards the group’s costs, but also fund activities for young people from townships in Cape Town which is a rare opportunity.
