Hackney Teens turn over new leaf

Young people from across Hackney spent a day getting their hands dirty to improve a local park, as part of volunteering group CSV Young Hackney Volunteers.
Last weekend, over 100 young people gave up their free time to clearing, weeding and litter-picking at Daubeney Green in Hackney and built several loggeries which are the chosen habitat of stag beetles (seriously in decline across the UK).
The young people also helped out at the Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian centre in Hackney to give their garden a much-needed facelift by cutting back the overgrowth and planting shrubs and hundreds of tulips.
Besides helping the community, Sami Hussain (16) said there was a benefit to everyone taking part: “By being involved in a community project you’ll gain skills which will stay with you throughout your life and it is a taster of work opportunities to come”.
One of the aims of the programme is to make sure that young people enjoy a more positive public image and to recognise the community spirit and desire to make a difference positively in their area. Ben Koh (16) says “It gives a positive image of young people, especially after recent events – this is an opportunity to show we are not all rowdy and rebellious and can give back to the community”.
