Young Hackney Volunteers, all aged between 13 to 19 years old, have given up their time for free this summer to cook healthy meals to homeless people, maintain local community gardens, and run summer clubs and buddy schemes for children.

In June, a group of volunteers organised a football tournament to fundraise for the Jahmal Mason-Blair Trust. More than 50 young people turned up to play football at Mabley Green Park on and raised an impressive £314 for the Trust, which will go towards a headstone for Jahmal.

Loong Ly, aged 19, who organised the football fundraising event in memory of Jahmal, says “I was a close friend of Jahmal; we played football together. His death inspired me to pursue our shared dream of becoming a professional footballer in America. It’s an honour to organise this football tournament and raise money for his headstone”.

If you are aged 13 – 19 (up to 25 with learning difficulties) and live in Hackney and are interested in volunteering, or if you would like more information about the project please contact Mira Ruskin on 0208 510 4900 or email mruskin@springboardlc.org.uk
