March 8 is the centenary of International Women’s Day and Hackney Young Women’s Group is marking the occasion with the return of their Big Debate – a women-only public speaking competition being held in Hackney Town Hall on Thursday 10 March from 2pm – 7pm.
Six teams from across Hackney will be debating the motion: “In today’s society men and women are viewed as equals!”
The YWG, supported by the Frampton Park Girl's Group, will also be presenting the 2011 Hackney Young Women’s Awards. The categories are:
- Hackney’s Young Woman of the Year – an award for a truly exceptional young woman who lives, works, or goes to school in the borough.
- Miss Motivator – presented to a young woman who inspires, supports and encourages her peers
- Miss Caring – For a young woman who is caring and thoughtful.
- Miss ‘Do-a-Lot’ – for a young woman who has demonstrated commitment and passion, and who's out there making the world a better place.
- Miss ‘Brave-heart’ – this award is specially designed for a young woman who has shown exceptional courage in order to overcome personal hardship, or has surmounted the obstacles placed in her way.
The event is free and is open to all young women aged 13 - 19 in Hackney – just come along!
