New plans for Parkside

posted by: Administrator

There’s been a bit of a gap since Young Hackney last posted news on the subject of myplace, so here’s an update. The programme was suspended over the winter while the government reviewed national spending.

The good news is the £5 million funding that was promised for new youth centres in Hackney has now been given the green light. This means Hackney Council will be building four new centres to go along with the new centre already built in Stoke Newington.

The last of the centres that we are consulting on is Young Hackney Parkside. Young Hackney is holding a consultation event at the Parkside centre next Wednesday 27 July 4.00 – 8.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

Even if you don’t use the centre at the moment please come along, we want to know why. The architects will be there to answer your questions, as will members of staff from the centre. If you don’t know where the centre is – click here for a map.

The consultation so far

  1. Young people at the centre met with the architects earlier this month to come up with a draft plan for the centre.
  2. They also talked about the kind of activities they’d like to see at the centre: there was a lot of interest in starting up a gym, as well as suggestions that we should create a space for dance and a music studio.

Here’s a model the architects created for the session.

You can see some of the other plans on the Young Hackney Parkside page.

So what do you think?

If you can’t turn up at the centre next Wednesday you can let us know what you think by email – send your ideas to tom.sheppard@hackney.gov.uk Here are some questions you might like to answer:

  • Do you think building a first floor is a good idea?
  • What kind of activities would you like to see at the new centre?
  • How could we improve the outside?
  • What do you think about making Enterprise the Parkside specialism?
