One of the many young people who have given up some of their time to contribute to the Young Hackney Volunteers Project (YHVP), Nathifa Alexander (pictured) has spent the summer recruiting other young people to participate in the project, updating the database with essential information, assisting in a dance workshop for younger children and liaising with volunteers about their weekly activities. She tells us about what she has gained from the experience.

Hi Nathifa, how did you get involved with YHVP?

I got involved with the YHVP through a family member who sent me some information in an email about the opportunities CSV (Community Service Volunteers) were offering.

Why did you sign up as a volunteer?

I decided to volunteer to offer my services to the community and at the same time better myself while learning new skills. I’ve always enjoyed helping people and value teamwork so being a part of the YHVP was a perfect match with my skills and personality.

What part of the experience do you enjoy the most?

I love to see other young people working together towards a positive outcome (i.e. the successful development of the YHVP).

What are you doing now?

I am currently working as a full-time volunteer on the YHVP and in my spare time I am part of a well-known dance group called ‘Ebonessence’, participating in various dance shows and completions across the UK.

What did you expect when you signed up?

I thought that YHVP would be all work and no fun, but I’m finding this experience amazing!

What do you hope to get out of this?

To gain a lot of experience, while bettering myself learning new skills.
