Hackney’s first ever Youth Conference on Saturday 11 September was an outstanding success: more than 100 young people turned up at the Town Hall to enjoy and participate in a programme packed with activities.
Organised by members of the Hackney Youth Parliament (HYP) and the four Area Youth forums (Homerton, North East, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington), with support from the Council’s Youth Service, the day featured thought-provoking debates, screenings and interactive workshops.
Highlights included the comedy workshop led by TJ, who said that using comedy as a way of exploring serious issues had worked well: 'We only had a short time in the workshop - maybe there wasn't enough time to draw out people's full potential. But it got people to step outside the box and find a way of expressing their talents.'
Other workshops includeed an exploration of heritage, migration and community cohesion, led by 14-year-old Jahmala Exton, entitled Who Do You Think You Are?
The conference ended with a presentation of awards by special guests Councillor Rita Krishna, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, and Superintendent Leroy Logan, of the Metropolitan Police, to members of the Hackney Youth Parliament in recognition of contributions over their two-year term.
