Carry the Torch for Hackney!

Could you or someone you know be one of the 8,000 inspirational people to carry the Olympic Torch to the Olympic Stadium next summer?
London 2012 is calling for nominations now for ordinary people who have done extraordinary things to become part of the 70-day Olympic Torch Relay around the UK which begins at Lands End on 19 May 2012 and finishes at the opening ceremony on 27 July.
More than 100 people a day will be needed to carry the Torch, with an estimated 30 carrying it through each London borough for a distance of around 300 metres each. The flame’s journey will begin when it is lit from the sun’s rays at Olympia, Greece, and will be accompanied wherever it goes by crowds and celebrations.
Bearers need to be over 12, live in the UK (but not necessarily be British citizens), and have a personal story which will inspire the millions of people around the world who will be watching the Torch Relay.
Do you know someone who makes a real difference in their school or local community, or has excelled in spite of difficulties? Is there an exceptionally good neighbour you know who regularly gives their own time to help vulnerable people?
It is easy to nominate a Torch Bearer but nominations must be in by 29 June. People can be nominated more than once but only one name will go into the initial ballot. The stories of shortlisted people will be read by one of 12 judging panels in the UK. Bearers will know whether or not they’ve been chosen in December 2011.
