Nearly 100 young people turned out at the launch event for the new Young Hackney Young People's Centre to try out the facilities, and take part in activities such as IT and multimedia workshops, healthy eating sessions, free microchipping for dogs, dance demonstrations and the Personal Best challenge.
The new centre was officially opened by Counciillor Krishna, Head of Children’s Services and two members of the original Myplace Group, Amy Nguyen and Leslie-Anne Orlans. The group, all aged 13 to 19, carried out the initial consultation with young people which led to the Council gettiing the £500k that was used to build the new centre.
“We were interested in making a change and getting young people’s voices heard,” said Amy. “There are stereotypes of young people not wanting to get involved, so we wanted to change that.”
Leslie-Ann said: “Our main role was to talk to people locally and explain to them how we would be getting the building refurbished. We wanted to see how they wanted to get the building to change.”
Ian Napa, European Champion boxer and a local celeb, also turned out to support the launch.
The centre will be open Tuesday to Thursday, after school to 9pm. Permanent facilities include a fully kitted-out IT suite, a kitchen for healthy eating sessions and a dance studio.
