The Name
We chose the name deep:black because many perceive blackness & darkness as something negative associated with fear of the dark and of the unknown; in the same way many see conflict as something negative. deep:black explores how creation happens in the dark, how seeds germinate and new life grows, how a black canvas is transformed through colour and photos are developed in the darkroom. deep:black is about supporting people in exploring their relationship with conflict by stepping into the dark creatively through the arts.
The Beginning
deep:black was founded by Kweku Aacht and Petra Hilgers; we were mediators and mediation outreach workers at Hackney Mediation Service and worked with people suffering from the negative impact that conflict had on their lives. We know first hand the sheer scale of conflict happening in East London. We realised the need for conflict resolution skills beyond the mediation case work, and when the Mediation Service was closed in June 2008 we decided to set up deep:black as a conflict and arts company.
