makin’ it happen

Makin’ It Happen (MIH) is the youth forum for IDS ensuring that young people and their views are represented at every level of IDS.

MIH started in the summer of 2004. 
Makin’ It happen youth forum it currently has 14 members between the ages of 12 to 21 years old from different backgrounds and diversities. All in education or in work.

Over the 5 years thirty six young people aged 12-21 have been actively involved in the MIH youth committee between 2004-9. The Cultural backgrounds of these have been quite diverse and include; Black British, African, White British, Turkish, Irish and Caribbean.

MIH Mission statement
MIH is bridging the gap between young people and adults on IDS estates and others and also working within the interests of young people. MIH is an Inspiration for young people.

The Makin’ It Happen (MIH) group have demonstrated that young people have a vested interest in their estates and what is happening locally. With the right support and training they also have the capacity, to become actively involved where they live.

MIH roles and Responsibilities

  • If you state something, prove your point by acting it out; back up your points
  • Setting examples seriously, role modelling towards young people
  • Respect one another and the community
  • Recruit more members e.g. friends, family members or general public
  • Attend IDS meetings eg- TRA meetings Tenant & Board meetings
  • Professionalism; act like you’re at work, do not act how you act in the streets/ at home/ estate
  • Good communication between MIH members and youth workers
  • Share responsibilities; if you agree to do something make sure you do it
  • Encourage others to take an active role
  • If you state something, prove your point by acting it out; back up your points
  • Setting examples seriously, role modelling towards young people
  • Strict rules/ regulations that must be in place at all times about membership and situations which could mean exclusion from MIH.
