THE CLUB THAT BEATS THE STREETS
St. Matthias Club fomerly St. Matthias Boys’ Club is a registered charity, which had served 8-20 year old boys in Hackney for a generation, catering for their recreational needs and supplementing their education with organized, disciplined and above all friendly environment.
The club was founded in 1968 by Nelson Riley, and the Rev. Ray Philips, the then Vicar of St. Matthias Church in Hackney, hence the name. The Club became an affiliate of the London Federation of Clubs for Young People in 1970.
The Club was officially opened by H.R.H Duke of Edinburgh in October 1984. The Club used to boast a membership of some 287 boys with nearly 200 actively involved in a wide variety of sporting social and educational activities which the Club offers. Although the building is not very large, the boys utilize it to its full potential.
The Club was closed and inactive for a few years from 2007-2010. Previous club members and employees have now re-launch the club on 7th Jan 2011 as a sports academy, accommodating and coaching youngsters with sports aspirations and ambitions.
