As part of the Government's myplace programme, Hackney Council has been awarded a total of £5m in funding to build four new or refurbished youth centres in the borough, linked to a flagship centre in the heart of Hackney (Forest Road). The plan is to develop four 'spoke' centres - one in each neighbourhood. The Shoreditch spoke will be at Hoxton Hall.
The grade II* listed music hall and adjoining arts centre dates from 1863: the last major building works were in 1977 and it is now in need of large scale renewal. The works, planned to take place between September 2011 and April 2012, are part of a larger master plan for Hoxton Hall, and focus on:
Improving access: New entrance, reception, external signage and lighting, a wheelchair accessible lift and more toilets to increase our capacity from 120 to 250
Better education and youth arts facilities: refurbishment of visual art studio, music rooms, rehearsal rooms, kitchen and cafe
Hoxton Hall, in partnership with the Young Hackney Service held open consultation events in April at the Let's Talk Shop office at 96 Hoxton Street, London, N1 6SG.
