150 people turned out for a presentation and entertainment evening celebrating the CSV volunteers, inspirational young people who have given up their time for free over the the past few months to help improve their communities. They have been involved in a whole range of activities including: setting up the CSV volunteers website, fundraising for the local St Joseph’s Hospice by collecting unwanted goods from residential estates, and organising a Christmas concert filled with entertainment with the donations going to the local winter night shelters in Hackney.
The group received their certificates from the President of CSV, Lord Levy and Executive Director Dame Elisabeth Hoodless.
One volunteer at the scheme, aged 16, received a certificate for volunteering over 500 hours, said: “After deciding to take a year out of college I thought being a full-time volunteer with CSV Young Hackney Volunteers would be a good option for me as it would add to my CV by improving my work skills such as time keeping, organisation, team work and using my initiative and allow me to make a difference in Hackney where I have grown up. Volunteering has helped build my confidence and given me a better understanding of a professional work environment. I can’t wait to get started on leading my own volunteer project!”
Another volunteer of the scheme who received a certificate for over 300 hours said “I wanted to be a part of helping others do something positive as I am from Hackney and I know it’s not the easiest of places to grow up in I wanted to try make a difference as well as building up a few skills such as my computer skills, team working ability and confidence. I would definitely recommend it to other young people.
