Youth of Hackney Radio on Tim Westwood’s BBC 1Xtra show

A group of young people living on and around the Fellows Court Estate Hackney visited BBC 1 Xtra to get the inside track on launching their own internet radio station.

The founding members of Youth of Hackney Radio, which will run out of the Fellows Court Community Centre, were able to speak to researchers, producers and presenters at the station while they were guests on Tim Westwood's show.

They spent time on air throughout the show and also met other music industry professionals from the world of Hip Hop such as members of ‘The Roots’. The group were inspired to go away develop their radio station with an open invitation to return at a later date to gain work experience and to be mentored by Tim and his team.

The group has been supported by Rising Tide's Youth Engagement Programme and Young Hackney, with help from Hackney Homes and the Fellows Court Tenants and Residents Association. They hope to see YOH Radio launch later this year with a mobile phone application and a celebrity event at the youth club.
