Your Health Rights: About Confidentiality
It’s important that to know that you have the right to confidential health appointments, no matter what age you are. Keeping something confidential means we don’t tell anyone, including your parents or school, the things you’ve told us or even that you have booked an appointment.
In the NHS children and young people are allowed to make their own decisions about their health care as long as they have “capacity” – in other words, if you can fully understand the information being shared with you by the health care professional.
This means you can trust us to keep it private unless we are really worried about you or someone else’s safety. Then we may need to talk to other professionals who will help to keep you or other people be safe. We will always try to discuss this with you first.
We would only need to say or do something if:
- You ask us to
- We believe your life, or someone else’s, is in danger
- You’re being hurt by someone in a position of trust who is able to hurt other children, like a teacher, religious leader, sports coach, police officer, doctor
- You tell us that you’re seriously hurting another person
- You tell us about another child who’s being hurt and is not able to tell someone or understand what is happening to them
- We’re told we have to by law, for example a court case
