Young Carers Action Day 2022

Wednesday 16 March 2022 is Young Carers Action Day, which this year has a focus of securing action to help address the isolation experienced by young and young adult carers.

Young Carers Action Day is an annual event, organised each year by Carers Trust.

It’s a day for raising public awareness of young carers and young adult carers, the pressures and challenges they face, and the incredible contribution they make by caring for their family members and friends. It is also a day to call for more action to support young and young adult carers and give them the extra bit of help they need to live full and healthy lives.

Young carers have highlighted how having the right support in place – such as regular short breaks from caring – can be really beneficial, giving them a better chance of succeeding in all parts of their lives. We also want to celebrate all the good practice taking place to provide access to support and services that helps prevent isolation among young and young adult carers.

This past year has been eventful for young carers in Hackney.
Some of the highlights have been:
  • two adventurous residentials
  • workshops in first aid
  • poetry
  • filmmaking
  • drama
  • forest skills
  • trips to Nando’s
  • trampolining
  • visits to the cinema
  • family get-togethers

and all of our school groups and drop-ins.

In the run up to Young Carers Action Day, our young carers worked with Headliners (a journalism and media youth charity) to answer two questions.
‘What do you wish the public knew about caring or being a young carer?’
and
‘What do you think other young carers need to know about accessing support?’

If you would like to discuss making a referral to Young Hackney’s Young Carers service for a young carer, email YH.YoungCarers@hackney.gov.uk or phone 0208 256 4800.
Young carers and their families can join us at the Forest Road Youth Hub on Saturday 19 March between 12pm and 3pm for a celebration of the role that young carers play in our community.
